Category: Ramblings

I love the Fusion razor, but since the blades went up and don’t last as long as they used to, they have priced me out of the market.

Indulge a short ramble if you please:

When I was growing up in south Florida we had three lawn mowers (four if you count the weed-eater). Each had its own purpose: a riding mower for the bulk of the lawn, an old Hahn-Eclipse push mower for trimming and for down by the canal, and an edger for the sidewalks and driveway.

You wouldn’t ride by the canal unless you wanted a swim; you wouldn’t do the whole yard with the push mower unless you wanted a coronary. Different tools for different parts of the job.

Bringing that thought back to the topic, I’ve started shaving most of my face with a high-quality single-blade razor, and reshaving/trimming with a Fusion. The single blades are very inexpensive, the end result is just as smooth, and the Fusion now lasts about three weeks instead of one.

One note of caution is that single-blade shaving is an acquired skill– don’t be discouraged if you have problems early on, you will get better. Also, apply aloe before and after; it will make things go more smoothly, especially the medicated aloe used for sunburns. Aloe is inexpensive and available at any grocery or drug store.

  • Step 1: Tell people there’s one on the way. They’ll defensively cut their spending, which will cause the recession.
  • Step 2: Relax and enjoy the fun.

Dusting off my tinfoil, hat, I have to wonder…

Does someone specifically benefit from rattling our economic cage in an election year?

Or is the media really so stupid that they don’t realize that their headlines are worsening the potential impact?

Shots from the 2008 Wheelchair Nationals/Sunshine Classic are up on the site.

I’m quite happy with the shots, for the seat I chose. I put a lot of the things that I learned at the February RMSP seminar up in Jacksonville to good use.

The giant white CJ banner fouled the white balance in the shots if a competitor moved, or was placed, entirely in front of it. Most shots I shot slightly off-center to keep a certain portion of the banner in the frame for white balance, then cropped it out in post-processing.

I left the show early.

More specifically, I had to leave before the prejudging was complete because I had other obligations. The show started an hour late, and ran at a pace I can only call moderate to slow. No useful explanation was forthcoming for anything.

Maybe I was grumpy because it bumped lunch so far back, or maybe I’ve been spoiled by really well-run shows of late, but after a while it gets to feel just plain insulting– and I’m *used* to a bit of delay, Bob only knows what the first-time spectators thought.

Everyone got shots, though, and I got to my next stop on time.

Why in the name of all reason did I have to expend extra time and effort to purchase a Federal postage stamp to send my Federal income tax return to the Federal Department of the Treasury?

It’s the simple inanities like this that give Fair Tax such a boost.

Quiz time:

To which party does disgraced New York governor Eliot Spitzer belong?

If you don’t know, it’s not surprising. It’s not a secret, and most of the news articles *do* mention it, but it’s not in the headlines nor usually in the top three paragraphs.

Hillary insists that our country has a “conservative media”. So since the media is obviously doing what they can to minimize party association, Eliot must be a Republican, right? Final answer?

*bzzzzt!* He’s a Democrat.

I can’t help but believe that if Eliot *wasn’t* a Democrat, every article in the world would have the word “Republican” in the first paragraph– if not the headline.

“Conservative media”, indeed.

I invented a cyborg with artificial intelligence to help with my yard work.

I call it a Cylon Mower.

I saw this article in the local paper a couple of days ago (though it’s strangely missing from their Web site, hence the external link) claiming that experts have noticed kids are swearing more these days.

My question is: how does one become an “expert” in such a field in the first place, and with the economy dropping like a paralyzed falcon*, couldn’t we find something more productive for them to do, like digging ditches or something?
