{"id":128,"date":"2006-12-29T07:42:45","date_gmt":"2006-12-29T14:42:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lucas-photo.com\/blog\/?p=128"},"modified":"2007-01-14T19:25:35","modified_gmt":"2007-01-15T02:25:35","slug":"raise-shields","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lucas-photo.com\/blog\/2006\/12\/29\/raise-shields\/","title":{"rendered":"Raise shields!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been getting a <strong>lot<\/strong> of feelers for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.optiniche.com\/blog\/117\/wordpress-trackback-tutorial\/\" target=\"_blank\">trackback spam<\/a> lately, so I&#8217;ve installed <a href=\"http:\/\/dev.wp-plugins.org\/browser\/spaminator\/trunk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kitten&#8217;s Spaminator plug-in<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>So far it&#8217;s working a treat.<\/p>\n<p>Long-term, though, I think we need to respond to spammers at their source: their customers.  <\/p>\n<p>I can think of lots of ways to do this, such as respond-bots that pollute their databases with random (but sane) values.  <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You bet I want to learn more about CAS1NO VIAAAAGRA CIAILS ROLLEX&#8221;, the &#8216;bot would say when it got a spam, &#8220;gonna go to your site to buy me some of that hot stock before it &#8216;explodes tomorrow&#8217;&#8211; just as soon as I pick a random value from the known-invalid credit card list!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wouldn&#8217;t that be great, if the identity thieves paid good money to the spammers for a list of marks, only to find that most of the identities were completely bogus bot-spawn? <\/p>\n<p>Or even better:  specially-crafted values being back-tracked by the authorities?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been getting a lot of feelers for trackback spam lately, so I&#8217;ve installed Kitten&#8217;s Spaminator plug-in.
