{"id":26,"date":"2006-01-08T02:16:57","date_gmt":"2006-01-08T06:16:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lucas-photo.com\/blog\/?p=26"},"modified":"2009-07-24T12:38:25","modified_gmt":"2009-07-24T16:38:25","slug":"wtf-wmf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lucas-photo.com\/blog\/2006\/01\/08\/wtf-wmf\/","title":{"rendered":"WTF WMF"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, days later we now have an Official patch for the .wmf vulnerability.<\/p>\n<p>If the mere existence of such sloppy code doesn&#8217;t infuriate you, consider this: <em>Every time you upgraded your Windows operating system, you paid again for that same busted DLL.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>CTOs and CIOs shouldn&#8217;t be worrying about how to get past this particular crisis.<\/p>\n<p>They shoud instead be considering two much more important questions:<\/p>\n<p>First, what else is vulnerable that no one (yet) knows about?<\/p>\n<p>Second, what would the impact on your business be if tomorrow you couldn&#8217;t run the OS you&#8217;re currently using?<\/p>\n<p>My belief in the superiority of the open-source software model is no secret, so I&#8217;m going to pass on this opportunity to do some (well-deserved) Microsoft-bashing.  <\/p>\n<p>The most important point is this: If you&#8217;re overly dependent on a single point of failure&#8211; <strong>any<\/strong> single point of failure&#8211; you should be thinking about contingency plans.  <\/p>\n<p>In this case, a solution such as creating bootable Linux or FreeBSD CDs, or booting a small distro from the network, may mean the difference between hours of downtime and continuing to function.   <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, days later we now have an Official patch for the .wmf vulnerability.
